Memories of us
drift by like
in my mind.
you're picking a petal from my hair,
hand warm and close to my cheek.
you're back-lit on the stage,
handsome, sharp eyes finding mine
in a crowd there for you.
my head is in your lap
and we're laughing--
in the early morning hours.
you're leaning back in a chair,
face tight with denial
that I mean anything to you.
you wipe a dewdrop from my cheek,
your fingers calloused but gentle,
yet I avoid your gaze.
we stare at each other across the table--
Eyes swimming with emotion,
both of us drowning in unspoken half-truths.
my hand tentatively reaching for yours.
you instinctively pulling away.
a letter on a pillow.
a plane ride home.
a glance at a blank phone screen.
a love come and gone.
Sometimes, ya just gotta let the emotions out.
